Members of the Tucker City Council voted on May 11 to establish the Tucker Youth Council, a program giving Tucker High School students the opportunity to participate in local government.
The Youth Council, approved by the council through a resolution, will include 14 sophomores, juniors, and seniors who will meet monthly from September 2026 to May 2027. Members of the council will participate in the City Council’s decision-making process, help create projects and activities, and voice the concerns of the youth population.
The responsibilities of the council include assisting city staff with public education and outreach activities, identifying and researching potential programs and activities for youth engagement and education, and coordinating with established programs and organizations in the community working to address the needs and concerns of young people.
Applications for the council will open in August, and applicants will be interviewed by city staff in early September.

Nicholas as Chief Judge and Jennifer L. White as Associate Judge. Both judges will serve two-year terms, reduced from four years by the council members during April’s meeting.

The city council also voted to approve a $1.8 million contract to resurface 29 streets across the city. The vote passed 4-2, with Alexis Weaver and Vinh Nguyen opposing the contract in favor of other budget priorities, like the completion of the South Fork Peachtree Creek Greenway, a 32-mile trail network connecting Tucker to other jurisdictions east of Atlanta.
Returning next month
Council members also considered two ordinances for a first reading during Monday’s meeting. They discussed the 2027 fiscal year budget, which they will vote on during the next meeting on June 8. Members of the council weighed the city’s priorities for 2027 during a work session on April 28. The city is facing a smaller budget this year due to the expenditure of American Rescue Plan Act funds, federal relief funding granted to state and local governments following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The council also briefly discussed the new Whataburger 24-hour drive-thru proposed for 4453 Hugh Howell Road on Monday. The council will vote on a special land use permit for the development next month.
