For the DeKalb County Board of Education candidates running to represent Tucker in District 4, last night’s election resulted in a runoff. While no candidates received the necessary 50% of the vote to win, Tracy Brisson and Sonja Szubski garnered the most votes, earning a spot in June’s runoff election.

Brisson led Tuesday’s election with 37.31% of the vote, compared to Szubski’s 21.22%.

“Thank you for all of your support over the last few months and at the polls, our work is not yet done,” Szubski wrote on Facebook following the election. “I would like to thank Alison, Crew and Jamison for their campaigns, their kindness and for being all around great people. I have so enjoyed meeting and getting to know y’all.”

“[W]e do this again on June 16, including raising some more [money] and some shifts in tone,” Brisson wrote on Facebook. “Stay tuned and thank you to everyone who got me here!”

Brisson is a DeKalb parent, former teach, and veteran public administrator. Her priorities on her campaign website include student-center redistricting, transparent E-SPLOST spending, total fiscal accountability, and open and honest governance. Her endorsements include GeorgiaCAN and the Organization of DeKalb Educators.

Szubski is a DeKalb parent and the communications director for the City of Tucker. Her priorities, as listed on her campaign site, include transparency, collaboration, and fiscal responsibility. Her endorsements include Tucker Mayor Anne Lerner and Tucker City Council members Alexis Weaver, Amy Trocchi, and Roger Orlando.

A total of 21,821 people of the more than 56,000 registered voters in District 4 voted in the primary election, 11,208 on Election Day. According to information shared with Brisson, the number of people who voted early in District 4 increased by 51% compared to 2022, and the youth vote (ages 18 to 24) increased by 497%.

In the other races for the DeKalb County Board of Education, Whitney McGinniss won for District 2 and Diijon “Twin” DaCosta – who ran unopposed – won for District 6.
