The Decide DeKalb Development Authority, in partnership with Venture South Investments, will host a groundbreaking ceremony for Candler Crossing, a mixed-use retail development planned for the southeast corner of Candler Road and Glenwood Road in Decatur.

The $28.9 million project is supported by a $3.82 million Tax Allocation District grant approved by the Decide DeKalb board, a release about the event said. Candler Crossing will feature a 50,325-square-foot grocery store, an 11,200-square-foot multi-tenant retail building, and pedestrian-focused community amenities.

The event, to be held at 1816 Candler Road in Decatur, will begin at 9 a.m. on June 11.

In attendance will be Dorian Barr, Decide DeKalb president and CEO, Evan Conder, Venture South Investments partner, Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, DeKalb County CEO, Dr. LaDena Bolton, DeKalb County commissioner, District 7, and Nicole Massiah, DeKalb County commissioner, District 3.

The groundbreaking marks the start of construction on Candler Crossing, a 26-acre redevelopment project expected to create at least 100 construction jobs and 183 permanent positions, the release said. Community features will include a hardscape plaza and green space, a walking trail, pedestrian improvements, and a renovated MARTA bus stop.

The project includes a dedicated 2,000-square-foot affordable retail space reserved for local businesses at 60% of market rent during the first five years.

Candler Crossing is using Decide DeKalb’s TAD “pay-as-you-go” grant structure, which reimburses developers only as tax-increment revenue is generated by completed projects, ensuring no upfront taxpayer risk.
