Family-friendly summer events

Tuesday, May 26 — With May coming to a close, we have stories on summer programming at the Chattahoochee Nature Center, more on historic homes for rent on the Agnes Scott campus, and details on Amplify Decatur, which kicks off on June 4.

But first, a few headlines:

💰 The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation announced the first milestones of its $50 million, 10-year scholarship initiative, reporting that more than $4.2 million has been disbursed to approximately 600 students at Atlanta’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

🛏️ Portman Hospitality Fund acquired the Westin Peachtree Plaza from Marriott, bringing Atlanta’s most recognizable hotel back under the control of the firm that designed and built it nearly 50 years ago.

💼 Atlanta Beltline, Inc. named Nino Maisuradze its new chief financial officer. She was previously CFO for Ingenico North America.

🐟 The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper says drought, polluted runoff and sewage overflows contributed to a massive fish kill along at least 20 miles of the river last week.

Agnes Scott College to open three historic homes for short-term rentals

🏘️ Visitors to Agnes Scott College will soon have a new place to stay.

Starting June 1, the college will be renting out three of its restored historic homes for short-term stays.

The rentals on West College Avenue are directly across from the iconic campus, just a short walk away from Decatur Square. Two locations can sleep up to 10, while a third sleeps up to six.

The school says the accommodations are ideal for families, alumni, visiting scholars, wedding parties, sports tournaments, conference attendees, and business travelers connected to nearby Emory University, the CDC, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and downtown Atlanta.

‘The Oldest Child’: Stories of Atlanta by Lance Russell

VIA SAPORTAREPORT

🏠 When George moved from his home in Alabama to Atlanta, he was only 16 years old. Nonetheless, he was acutely aware that the responsibility for the well-being of his mother and his five siblings rested squarely on his shoulders.

Amid the fervor and chaos of an Atlanta recovering from the ravages of the Civil War, the young man took it upon himself to find a job and then set out to build his family a home. The job he found would ultimately make George a household name throughout the South – and the house he built still stands to this day.

🗞️ It’s the tale of a young man coming of age in the big city on this week’s Stories of Atlanta.
