Three Georgia State Senate and two State House districts carve up the city of Norcross, and a couple of primaries are headed to a June 16 runoff amid other state and federal races.
Early and absentee voting are already underway. For West Gwinnett voters in Georgia’s 7th Senate District, which includes most of Norcross north of Buford Highway, ballots may be confusing.

Two races on one ballot
The Georgia State Senate is the upper chamber of the legislative branch. Each term is two years, and there are 56 members. Currently, the Georgia Senate has 21 Democrats, 33 Republicans, and two vacancies.
Former state Sen. Nabilah Parkes (D-Duluth) resigned from Georgia’s 7th Senate District in March to focus on her run for lieutenant governor. Parkes faces state Sen. Josh McLaurin (D-Sandy Springs) in the Democratic primary runoff on June 16.
Georgia’s 7th Senate District has two races for the seat on June 16. One is a special election to finish the remainder of Parkes’ vacated term, and the other is a Democratic Party primary to pick nominees for the full two-year term beginning in January.
State law requires Gov. Brian Kemp to call a special election to fill the seat. Read more about the county’s consolidated ballots and June 16 election here.
Voters will first decide whether Republican Aizaz Shabaz Shaikh or Democrat Adrienne White finishes Parkes’ term.
Meanwhile, state Rep. Ruwa Romman (D-Duluth) is running in the Democratic primary for Georgia’s 7th Senate District instead of the 97th House District. In the Democratic runoff, Romman faces Rahul Garabadu. The winner will face Shaikh in November, regardless of whether he wins the special election.
More state senate and house races
In Georgia’s 5th Senate District, state Sen. Sheikh Rahman (D-Lawrenceville) won the Democratic primary against Robin McCoy. Without a Republican running for the seat, Rahman will serve another two-year term.
Western Norcross contains a sliver of Georgia’s 40th Senate District, which state Sen. Sally Harrell (D-Chamblee) has represented since 2019. Harrell was unchallenged in the Democratic primary and will face Republican Melina Mast in November’s general election.

Norcross’ two state house districts split the city roughly along Buford Highway and contain parts of historic downtown. Georgia’s 96th House District includes most of the area between Buford Highway and I-85 from Mechanicsville to Duluth.
State Rep. Arlene Beckles, a former Norcross City Council member, won the Democratic primary for the 96th House District against Tanjina Islam. With no Republican qualifying to run, Beckles will serve a second term beginning next year.
Georgia’s 97th House District includes most of the area between Buford Highway and the Fulton County border from southern Peachtree Corners to Duluth. The incumbent Romman is running for the Georgia State Senate.
In the May primaries, Democratic candidate Jyot Singh defeated Jacques Laurent. In November’s general election, Singh will face Republican candidate Yassin Moghazy, who ran unopposed.
