Happy Juneteenth!
Friday, June 19 — Katie here, back with some more Tucker tidbits. Today is Juneteenth, the national holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in January 1863, the holiday honors June 19, 1865, when the enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free. Because they were the final Americans to receive the news and thus become free, Juneteenth is celebrated as the actual end to slavery (save for the loophole in the 13th Amendment).
All Tucker city buildings are closed today for the occasion, and while Tucker celebrated last weekend, there are several events happening in and around Atlanta. Stone Mountain Park is hosting a free drone and light show every night this weekend honoring Georgia’s Black history.
In other news:
☕ Perk Up with Parks returns to the Tucker Rec Center on Sat., June 20. The monthly event is an opportunity to connect with department leaders, share what’s working well, discuss areas for improvement, and offer new ideas to help shape the future of parks and recreation in Tucker.
🎸 Frankly Scarlet, The Platonics Band, and Man Hands Lizzie perform shows this weekend at Moonshadow Tavern.
🏅 Registration is open for the Fall Adult Kickball League at Fitzgerald Park. The league meets on Fridays starting on August 14. Registration is available for complete teams and free agents.
🖤 Enjoy your weekend,
Katie
