A warehouse fire broke out before 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, at a commercial business on Marietta Boulevard in the industrial area on Atlanta’s westside.
No injuries were reported after the hazardous chemical reaction occurred after water came into contact with a commercial fertilizer component. Atlanta Fire and Rescue responded promptly, and cleared the area by 10 a.m.
“During the investigation, firefighters identified a substance requiring a hazardous materials response. As a precaution, additional specialized resources have been requested while crews continue to assess the situation and work to ensure the area is safe,” Atlanta Fire and Rescue said in a statement.
This incident comes nearly two years after a massive chemical fire in Conyers. This week, a report released by the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board found that components of a sprinkler system inside the BioLab plant “had been experiencing significant corrosion and leaking” since 2019. That was shortly after the company began storing the chemicals at the Conyers plant, the agency said in its final report on the fire.
