Dunwoody established a new culture last season in its first year under head coach Matthew Schmitz after he was promoted to the lead role following three seasons as the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator. Dunwoody began the season with three close games as the Wildcats lost 15-12 to St. Pius X at the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, defeated Pope 24-16 and dropped the final non-region game 32-24 to Lumpkin County. They opened region play with double-digit wins over Tri-Cities, Lakeside-DeKalb and Arabia Mountain, beginning the region slate 3-1. Dunwoody then suffered a loss to Woodward Academy, dominated Chamblee, and lost by a touchdown in the regular season finale to Shiloh. For the third straight year, the Wildcats’ season ended in the first round of the playoffs as they were handed a 48-3 loss by Gainesville, extending the program’s playoff win drought to 16 years.
Quarterbacks William Whitehurst and Jack Quartararo both saw the field last year, but Quartararo got the majority of the snaps. Quartararo finished the season with 1,064 passing yards on 97 completions with six touchdowns, while Whitehurst tallied 273 yards on 28 completions with three touchdowns. In the run game, Bradley Stephens, who had nine rushing touchdowns last year, has one more season before he graduates. Defensively, Dunwoody has junior Darius Hall and senior Chase Casey leading the way. Last season, Hall recorded 10 tackles for loss and four sacks while Casey commanded the secondary with seven pass deflections and an interception.
