🇺🇸 Norcross remembers 9/11
Friday, Sept. 11 — Hey, it’s Hayden with my weekly Norcross newsletter.
Today we honor the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, along with first responders and military personnel.
In response to the attacks, the federal government formed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). (Recently, TSA announced the loosening of select post-9/11 restrictions.) And in December 2001, a joint resolution of Congress established 9/11 as Patriot Day.
I was 2 on 9/11, so this article from Reuters provides interesting insights into how a generation of young people like me have come to understand the attacks.
Flags will be at half-staff today for the National Day of Service and Remembrance. Norcross held its own ceremony downtown this morning.
⬇️ Quick round-up of things to know:
⛔ The city will be closing some downtown roadways Saturday morning for the 25th annual Atlanta British Car Fayre, including sections of Buchanan, Jones, and Thrasher streets, as well as Skin Alley and Britt Avenue.
🎥 Next week’s Movie Monday is “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” with showings at 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. at the Norcross Cultural Arts & Community Center.
🏛️ Three citizen-led city boards meet next week, including the Norcross Architectural Review Board, which is reviewing two residential modifications on Sept. 15 in the North Peachtree Street neighborhood. The Discovery Garden Park Board and the Parks, Green Spaces & Trails Commission also have meetings.

Norcross City Council bids farewell to city manager
🤝 City Manager Eric Johnson said farewell to the Norcross community at the Sept. 8 council meeting. He departed after nearly six years as the city’s top official running day-to-day operations. Incoming City Manager Cheri Hobson-Matthews officially begins her role today.
Johnson said he’ll miss everyone he’s met in Norcross, adding that “what’s cool about this town is you have conversation just walking down the sidewalk.”
“I was hired on a Zoom call during COVID, where we each were in a different room, and I leave in a period when people are using AI to write their own emails,” Johnson said. “There have been bumps along the way.”

Atlanta British Car Fayre celebrates 25th anniversary in Norcross
🚘 The Atlanta British Car Fayre returns to downtown Norcross on Saturday, Sept. 12, for its 25th anniversary, featuring more than 400 classic automobiles and motorcycles. This year’s featured British marque, or car manufacturer, is the iconic luxury brand Jaguar.
From 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the historic city center will transform into a celebration of British culture, with vendors and downtown businesses selling British-themed items, food, and beverages.

Norcross officials limit details on early August cyberattack
🖥️ At the end of August, Norcross officials told residents the city had identified “a ransomware incident” that took place on Aug. 1 that impacted some computer systems.
The Aug. 28 announcement said city officials contacted experienced cybersecurity professionals and law enforcement as soon as they detected the incident.
On Wednesday, Sept. 9, a Norcross spokesperson said the city is continuing to work with cybersecurity professionals and law enforcement to investigate the incident’s nature and scope.

🏢 Georgia-based public accounting and business advisory firm Nichols Cauley announced it acquired The LaRocco Companies, a privately owned employee benefits brokerage and advisory firm headquartered just outside Norcross.
Owned and led by brothers Andrew and Jeffrey LaRocco, the firm has spent 46 years focused exclusively on employee benefits, designing, administering, and managing benefits programs for employers across metro Atlanta and the broader Georgia market.
