To your health
Wednesday, Oct. 7 — Welcome back! Last week, two different people told me how much they love reading Rough Draft because it keeps them “informed, but not stressed.” Kudos to our small but mighty team, which is now expanding to Athens! Click here to subscribe to the weekly Athens newsletter, coming soon.
It has been a particularly brutal news cycle lately, especially for women. Last week, I wrote a timely story about ways to unplug with phone-free activities in Atlanta.
Finally, check out these things that have brought me joy the past few days:
🎂 “The Great British Baking Show” is back. Nigella Lawson’s sharp, empathetic judging has been a revelation — so has her unabashedly enthusiastic eating, refreshing in the era of unending diet culture.
👗 British actor Olivia Colman, 52, made her runway debut for Miu Miu at Paris Fashion Week, sporting longer gray locks and chic, flat brown loafers.
🐕 A sassy dog named Banana ran away from the competition, Usain Bolt-style, at the Seattle Seahawks’ Corgi Cup halftime show this past weekend.
🏆 Sports brand Altra recently launched The Legacy Team, comprising some of the oldest competitive runners in Great Britain.
🏃🏻♀️ Roswell native Emma Grace Hurley will make her debut at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Sunday. Hurley recently placed fifth and set the U.S. women’s-only record at the World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen. Learn more about her training in this CITIUS MAG podcast.
Be well!

Preserve Life Opens Nutrition Nest Clinic in Douglasville

🥗 Nutrition Nest, an experiential kitchen and personalized nutrition clinic from longevity brand Preserve Life, opened in Douglasville. The first planned facility at the 1,200-acre health and wellness retreat, Nutrition Nest combines medical testing with culinary medicine, personalized nutrition, aesthetic treatments, and food education.
The space includes an experiential kitchen with chef-led cooking classes, a cafe with fresh-pressed juices and coffee, and a functional market stocked with groceries and nutritional supplements. Much of the food is sourced from an on-site, 150-acre organic farm and 50,000-square-foot organic greenhouse.

💬 “How was your day?” “Fine.” If that’s the whole conversation at your house, it probably isn’t that your teen doesn’t want to talk to you.
Research shows being watched raises physical arousal more in adolescence than at any other age, so a face-to-face question costs more than it looks. Try this: sit beside them, not across. Skip the first 20 minutes after school. Ask one specific thing, like “What was the most annoying part of today?”

Atlanta’s Newest Pro Sports Team Hosts Launch Party

🎉 Hundreds of soccer fans, young and old, lined up along Peachtree Street on Sunday to attend a fan fest at Southern Exchange Ballrooms for a new professional women’s soccer team, Atlanta City FC. The team will begin playing at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2028.
Atlanta City FC is the 17th club in the National Women’s Soccer League. Home Depot co-founder Arthur Blank, who also owns the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United, secured the franchise with a $165 million expansion fee.

💡 As a Sagittarius, I will 100% book that last-minute international flight on a whim, with zero planning (or budgeting). This year, I’ve tried to be more intentional about my spending. And it felt good to book those tickets to Montreal this fall with money specifically set aside for that purpose.

The Short List
🍏 The new Netflix adaptation of “East of Eden” is riveting. Florence Pugh brings fierce complexity and humanity to her portrayal of Cathy, the manipulative (and, I would argue, misunderstood) character from John Steinbeck’s classic novel. Give her all the awards now. Fun fact: series creator Zoe Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation.
🍂 Forget quiet luxury. I’m obsessed with the maximalist, manor-meets-mob-wife style of Susie Glass on “The Gentlemen.” Bring on the jewel-toned velvet suits, luxe cashmere sweaters, and oversized tweed blazers.
🩷 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, I appreciated this story about new blood tests for early breast cancer screening.

💆🏼♀️ I’m happy the sweaty summer days are behind us, but cooler air can strip critical moisture from the skin and weaken the skin barrier, making it more prone to redness and irritation.
Both locations of Aviary will offer the new Rescue Spa Reset by Danucera starting Oct. 15. Appropriate for all skin types, the customized treatment includes sculpting massage, lymphatic movement, and personalized products for a lifted, radiant glow.
