The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management says a neighborhood bridge in Atlanta is closed after a “heavy vehicle” hit the bridge and caused a partial collapse.

The vehicle compromised the “structural integrity” of the Moores Mill Road bridge over Peachtree Creek and damaged a water line.

The city did not identify what kind of vehicle hit the bridge.

The Department of Watershed Management and the Atlanta Department of Transportation are assessing the damage to the bridge and water line, and investigating what happened.

The bridge is closed “until further assessment and completion of necessary repairs,” the Department of Watershed Management said.

Triple Team Traffic says West Wesley Road and Defoors Ferry Road are the best alternate routes.

Earlier, Dustin Hillis, Atlanta City Councilmember for District 9, said via social media that an overnight water valve failure has caused a buttress wall to collapse at the Moores Mill Road bridge over Peachtree Creek.

“Even if it is reopened or only repaired, this bridge will continue to be a top priority for replacement for Districts 9 and 8, as it is over 100 years old and has had a number of issues over the years,” Hillis said.
