Collective works
Wednesday, Oct. 28 — Nine artists in one gallery. More than 30 arts leaders and funders at one table. This edition of Sketchbook is about what it looks like when Atlanta’s arts community comes together.
☀️ At The Sun ATL, “What We Carry Forward” features artists rooted in Africa and Latin America – and Atlanta. Curator Eric Bomba-Ire built the exhibition around a question he has carried since arriving here in 1997: What happens to what we inherit when we move? The show anchors MENTAL 2.0, Inceptr’s monthlong initiative on mental health and well-being.
💵 Arts Capital | Atlanta (AC|A) is putting money where the need is. The collaborative has pooled more than $1 million for its first Redistribution Fund. Every eligible nonprofit that applies by tomorrow gets an equal share of unrestricted dollars.
Bomba-Ire’s show came together with the help of a co-curator, two partner galleries and an assistant to sort through the work. AC|A’s fund was built on the cooperation of arts organizations from across Metro Atlanta that were willing to work together.
In a region where public arts funding comes to about $1.96 a person, well below the national average of $5.44, collaboration isn’t sentimental. It’s strategy.
What part of Atlanta’s culture are you helping carry forward?
