The news at the Brookhaven City Council’s Oct. 27 meeting happened not in the chambers, but outside them, as an electrical fire at the adjoining MARTA station had the area swarming with rescue personnel for several hours.

MARTA officials, in a statement, said a traction power substation at Brookhaven Station caught fire, causing the station to be evacuated and service halted.

“Fire and Rescue successfully extinguished the fire at the traction power substation, and a bus bridge has been established between Lenox and Chamblee stations to transport affected passengers,” the statement said.

Around 6:30 p.m., passersby heard alarms from the station’s first floor, below the train platform, and about 10 minutes later, acrid smoke wafted into the sky above the station.

No injuries were reported by MARTA or rescue personnel, and the station was back in operation around 9 p.m.
