🎃 It’s Halloween Eve

Friday, Oct. 30 — Hey, it’s Hayden with my weekly Norcross newsletter. Be careful while driving this weekend; there should be hundreds of trick-or-treaters downtown and running around the city’s neighborhoods.

I’m 27, and it’s probably a good thing my Halloween spirit has tapered since elementary school. Nobody wants teenagers, much less an adult, at their door asking for candy.

I haven’t picked out a costume this year, and my girlfriend and I need one for a costume party this weekend. Humans with shrimp heads? Matching Dobby the Elf costumes? Giant fish? Our current plan is to be pirates.

⬇️ Quick roundup of things to know:

🚧 The Norcross Police Department is closing sections of North Peachtree Street, Sunset Drive, and Huddersfield Way from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, with a high volume of pedestrians expected.

🪦 Norcross is celebrating Día de los Muertos, a Mexican holiday on the first two days of November blending Catholic and Aztec traditions, with a festival at Thrasher Park tonight from 5-9 p.m.

🍬 Trick-or-treating at downtown Norcross businesses is from 3-6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31.

🏛️ The Norcross City Council meets for a regular meeting on Monday, Nov. 1, where elected officials will vote on construction contracts for a city hall parking expansion, as well as an extension of the historic demolition moratorium.

🗳️ Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 2. Norcross voters can vote in the general election (run by Gwinnett County) AND the city’s special election (held at city hall). Here is Rough Draft Atlanta’s Election Guide. We’ll have a live results page on Tuesday covering statewide and local races.

Have a great weekend,
🖖 Hayden

Norcross mayor targets affordability and growth in annual address

🏛️ Norcross Mayor Craig Newton, nearing his ninth year in office, said his priorities for the coming year are to keep essential services dependable, manage costs, invest in walkability, and “help people participate in shaping growth.”

The Oct. 27 State of the City address saw about 100 community members and municipal employees pack the community room at the new Norcross Public Safety Building on Buford Highway.

“There’s a great deal of work we can be proud of; there are also issues that we still need to work through,” Newton said. “Norcross has limited land available … redevelopment can be expensive, and residents have different views about the right scale and the location for new growth.”

City Council candidates share plans for one-year term

🛤️ With early voting already underway in the Nov. 3 special election to fill an unexpired city council term, Kristen Corley’s Norcross Social Club newsletter is sharing a Q&A with the two candidates.

An Oct. 6 debate was postponed and later canceled after one of the candidates’ family members had a medical emergency. Former Mayor Bucky Allen is running against former Council Member Jeff Allen.

Johnson was elected mayor in 2007 and served five terms before announcing he would not seek reelection in 2017. Allen, a 30-year resident, sat on the council from 2006-08.

City says state will repave Holcomb Bridge Road in coming weeks

🚜 The Georgia Department of Transportation expects to begin resurfacing Holcomb Bridge Road from South Peachtree Street to Atlantic Boulevard within the next few weeks, according to the city of Norcross.

The Oct. 26 announcement did not say when the project would begin or how long it would take to complete. Temporary road closures and detours are expected.

“This is a GDOT project, and the agency has not yet confirmed an exact start date,” the statement said. “We wanted to give you an early heads-up and will share the confirmed start date as soon as we receive it.”
