Start Father’s Day morning at run4DAD, a family event with something for everyone – the 5K race, 1 mile run/walk, kids4DAD tot trot and even a snooze4DAD option. run4DAD benefits ProstAware, a 501(c)3 Georgia non-profit dedicated to bringing prostate cancer awareness and education to men and their loved ones.

It’s an annual tradition for three generations of the Heslep family to come to run4DAD to honor Dad, Tom Heslep, as a prostate cancer survivor, and to support ProstAware’s mission of increasing prostate cancer awareness and education for men and their loved ones. The Heslep family includes (L to R), Tom and Pam Heslep; son Jason Heslep; daughter Jennifer Heslep Benton; and her children, Emmy Claire and Colby.

The annual run4DAD 5K, a Peachtree Road Race Official Qualifying Event, is scheduled Father’s Day morning, Sunday, June 21, at Wills Park in Alpharetta. Presenting sponsor for this family-fun race is Wellstar. Atlanta radio and TV personality Crash Clark, featured on The Morning X on 99X, serves as emcee.

Making run4DAD a family affair has become a tradition for the Heslep family – Tom and Pam Heslep; their son, Jason Heslep; daughter, Jennifer Heslep Benton and her children, Colby, Cooper and Emmy Claire. The Heslep family members live in Athens and Winder, so they stay at a hotel close to the race the night before to avoid the long drive in the morning.

Tom Heslep, a prostate cancer survivor and ProstAware board member, got involved with the non-profit to increase awareness of prostate cancer. “One in eight men will get this disease, so we all need to be talking to family and friends about the importance of a prostate cancer screening because early detection can save lives,” he said.

“Our family has really enjoyed gathering for dinner together the night before and then we all run (with some walking as well) the 5K with our Dad on Father’s Day morning to support him as a survivor,” Jason Heslep, Senior Production Manager at Warner Bros. Discovery, said. “It’s also a reminder for men over 40 like me who have a father or brother with prostate cancer that our risk of developing this disease more than doubles. We especially need to be proactive about screenings so it can be caught early,” he pointed out.

“Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men,” said Scott D. Miller, MD, MBA, founder of ProstAware and medical director of Wellstar Urology. “Every 20 minutes a man loses his life to prostate cancer. The good news is the statistics can be changed. When prostate cancer is detected and treated in the early stages, the 5-year survival rate is 99%, Dr. Miller explained. “Celebrate and honor the men in your life by participating in this Father’s Day morning event that helps increase prostate cancer awareness and education,” he added.
