DeKalb County Schools Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson held a roundtable discussion at Dunwoody High School Oct. 27 as part of her goal to meet with parents, teachers and principals throughout the system during her first 90 days in office.

Some parents offered suggestions, such as ways to change the curriculum to allow students to learn at their own pace.

Others expressed their concerns about a school system that they referred to as broken. There were also several people who asked Atkinson to address what they called disparities among schools in different parts of the county.

Atkinson said she has been touring the schools and trying to understand what the issues are.

“We’ve got to fix it. I’m trying to work on how we do staffing, how we allocate,” Atkinson said. “We should have some non-negotiables that every school has.”
