Chris Triolo, Riverwood International Charter School’s new principal

Riverwood International School has a new principal, and he comes from the same school district as Fulton County School’s new school superintendent.

Chris Triolo will take over as Riverwood’s new principal on Dec. 12, according to a letter sent to parents and faculty members on Nov. 1.

Triolo currently serves as the principal at John Motley Morehead Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Academy in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, NC.  Prior to taking over as Fulton County School’s new superintendent, Robert Avossa served as  Chief Strategy and Accountability Officer for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

In the letter, Iris Moran, the instructional area superintendent, said Triolo emerged as the top candidate during his interviews with Fulton County schools. Moran said in the letter the input of a committee stakeholders, made up of members of the Governance Board, Parent Teacher Student Association, the Riverwood Foundation, Student Government Association members, teachers, a school counselor, and central office personnel, was “invaluable” to the hiring process.

“Superintendent Robert Avossa followed up with this screening process with additional interviewing, which included questions recommended by the interview panel,” Moran said.

Triolo’s educational resume includes positions at the elementary and middle school level as well as work as a 6th-12th grade science teacher. He has served at the district-level as a science specialist for grades K-12, the letter says.

Triolo has a specialist’s degree from Eastern Carolina University in North Carolina, a Master’s of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Winthrop University in South Carolina, and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Bryan College in Tennessee, the letter says.

“As an instructional leader, Mr. Triolo has increased student achievement and narrowed the achievement gap while also increasing academic rigor. His current school was named by the State of North Carolina and the Magnet Schools of America as a School of Distinction and has the largest waiting list of prospective students in the district with more than 750 families seeking to enroll in Morehead,” the letter says.

Triolo replaces former principal Eddie Echols, who resigned in September following an audit report that found he mismanaged school funds.

“Mr. Triolo was selected as Riverwood’s principal because of his ability to establish strong lines of communication with students, staff and stakeholders, as well as his ability to serve as a motivator, role model, and relationship builder. These were key attributes desired in the screening survey completed by stakeholders,” the letter says.
