Dunwoody’s new mayor and two new City Council members took office Jan. 3. They were sworn in to office during  a standing-room-only ceremony at City Hall.

City Councilman John Heneghan was sworn in for a second term. Heneghan was among the original members of the first Dunwoody City Council.

“This is the most crowded I’ve seen this room in the last three years,” Heneghan said. “Stay engaged. Help us govern. That’s what we’re really here to do.”

Supreme Court Justice David Nahmias administered the oath of office to newly elected mayor Mike Davis, Councilwoman Lynn Deutsch and Councilman Terry Nall.

Former Mayor Ken Wright ceremoniously presented incoming Mayor Mike Davis the gavel, the symbol of the presiding officer, so Davis could chair his first meeting.

Davis said he is looking forward to seeing what “council 2.0” can accomplish.

“I want to thank you for giving me the chance to be the second mayor,” Davis said. “With that let’s pray that everything goes according to plan.”

The only other item on the short agenda was the election of a mayor pro tem to serve in the mayor’s absence. The council voted to reappoint Councilman Denis Shortal as mayor pro tem.

The audience included elected and appointed officials such as DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis and state Rep. Tom Taylor.
