The story of a Sandy Springs man accused of killing his girlfriend’s dog and then beating her with it is going viral.

Today the Huffington Post and the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that Emmanuel Alfredo Tadeo is accused of killing a Pomeranian owned by Andrea Armintrout and then struck her with it. The AJC reports that Tadeo is facing felony animal cruelty charges. Armintrout is being charged with obstruction of justice, the AJC reported.

In January, Reporter Newspapers profiled Ahimsa House, an organization that protects pets of domestic violence victims, animals can often become pawns in an abuser’s attempts to control victims.

Ahimsa House estimates that 50 percent of domestic violence victims are afraid to leave their abusers because they worry about their pets.
