The atrium at Colony Square is filled with curious sculptures made from canned goods and food items: there’s the Lorax, Ratatouille stirring up a pot of stew, a looming Darth Vader and an oversized Captain America shield. These pieces – and many more – are part of CANstruction 2012, which is organized locally by the Society for Design Administration and American Institute of Architects Atlanta to benefit the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Teams design and build the sculptures in a matter of hours and all the food used – some 32,000 pounds of it – goes to the Atlanta Community Food Bank for distribution to the needy. The CANstruction pieces are on display through Nov. 19, so definitely drop by and see these creations. The kids will love them, too. The winners of the various prizes and those selected to go on to the international competition sponsored by the CANstruction charity will be announced in our December issue.
