The Brookhaven Police Department introduced its newest four-legged officer, K9 Recon, a Belgian Malinois, who is now serving alongside his handler, David Fikes. Recon steps into the role following the retirement of K9 Bane this past February.
According to a release from the department, Recon was born on January 28, 2024, in Croatia and imported to the United States in February 2026, where he was partnered with Officer Fikes. He is a dual-purpose police service dog, trained in narcotics detection as well as the full range of patrol functions, including tracking suspects and missing persons, evidence recovery, building and open-area searches, and criminal apprehension.
Recon completed his first certification in May 2026, officially marking his readiness to serve the Brookhaven community.

“Recon brings a level of skill and versatility that strengthens our ability to keep this community safe,” Fikes said in the release. “He’s not just a tool for the job – he’s a partner.”
The Brookhaven Police Department extended its sincere thanks to the Brookhaven Police Foundation for its continued support, including its contribution toward the purchase of K9 Recon.
Most K9 officers cost about $8,000 to $15,000 to purchase and thousands more to train, according to experts in the field.
