Sandy Springs police will collect drugs with expired prescriptions or that are otherwise unneeded on April 27 during the department’s third annual collection of unwanted drugs.

During a similar event last year, Sandy Springs police collected more than 100 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs, the department said in a press release. In four previous events nationally, officials have collected more than 2 million pounds of drugs, the press release said.

The drug “take backs” are part of a national “Drug Take Back Day” sponsored by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Drugs collected through the events are destroyed in ways to avoid environmental harm.

Police will collect unwanted drugs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on April 27 at Sandy Springs police headquarters, 7840 Roswell Road, Building 301.
