The following Sandy Springs crime incidents and arrests are some but not all of the reports filed with SSPD over the listed period, dated through May 24.
The following information was provided by the Sandy Springs Police Department from its records and is presumed to be accurate.
Burglary
1500 block of Spring Creek Lane 30350 – On May 21, a resident said he took a morning walk and found his door open when he returned. Someone had gotten in and taken several items including his TV, iPad, laptop and Canon camera.
400 block of Morgan Falls Drive 30350 – On May 21, the resident reported that someone accessed his storage closet. There was no forced entry. Several items were taken.
8100 block of Colquitt Road 30350 – On May 22, someone entered the victim’s home through a front door and took a TV.
1000 block of Huntcliff Trace 30350 – On May 22, a man reported that while he was gone during the afternoon, someone entered his home by forcing a rear door. It appears the suspect looked around, but at the time of the report nothing was known to be missing.
Theft
200 block of Sandy Springs Place 30328 – On May 20, an employee of Kroger said he placed his wallet on one of the self-service checkout locations and someone took it.
Londonberry Road 30342 – On May 20, the resident reported that several items of jewelry were missing from the home.
A resident on Belle Isle Road reported that when she returned from out of town, she found a Bank of America envelope that had been opened and the credit cards (new) had been taken. She has a community mailbox she shares with nine others.
One option: Have your mail sent to a post office box. You have to go there and get it, but those locations, most often in retail shopping areas, are rarely burglarized.
Theft from Vehicles
Articles were stolen from vehicles on the following dates:
500 block of Peachtree Dunwoody Road 30342, May 21
7500 block of Roswell Road 30350, May 21
6100 block of Lake Forrest Drive 30328, May 22
200 block of Winding River Drive 30350 May 22
Fraud
A woman on Bittersweet Trail reported she was contacted by Capital One because someone in Decatur tried to obtain a credit card in her name using her Social Security number.
A resident at The Landing in Sandy Springs said someone used her husband’s checking account information to pay bills in California. About $2,000 was taken from the account. A car note, cable bill, and energy bill were paid.
A man called police and said he was scammed by someone possibly posing as his grandson. He received a call on May 20 from a person who said he was his grandson. The victim had not talked to his grandson in a year, so they spoke for a while. The grandson said he was in the Dominican Republic, doing work for the Red Cross. The next day his grandson called and said he and his friends were in a car and were pulled over by the police. The cops found 10 pounds of marijuana in the car. He was not in jail, but needed $1,800 for a “performance” bond. He gave the victim the name of an “Officer Winters,” and supposedly the number for the consulate there. Officer Winters told the victim not to speak of the incident for fear he would be flagged as a “participant in a drug scheme.” The victim was told to go to Walmart and wire money to a person at an address in the Dominican Republic. Officer Winters later called back and said that the $1,800 would be refunded at a later date, but he now needed $1,700 for attorney fees, non-refundable. The victim then smelled a rat. He told the man he would not send the money. Officer Winters wanted the victim’s Social Security number and other information. The victim now knew he was had and told the man his grandson could get himself out of trouble. A call later confirmed that his grandson had never been to the location. The man isn’t sure that it was or wasn’t his grandson involved since he sounded like him. The kid has a history, but the victim isn’t really sure.
Assault
Officers responded to the first block of Cedar Run where a man had been struck by a rock. The man’s wife said someone hit him in the head, and as the suspect fled, someone yelled “Justin,” which may be the name of a suspect. The man was transported to the hospital.
4700 block of Roswell Road 30342 – On May 22 a woman told officers that she and her boyfriend had a four-year relationship but broke up a month ago. She allowed him to stay at the apartment for one month. They got into an argument over his accusation of her infidelity. She countered with his infidelity. Soon the argument turned physical. Both were charged.
Arrests
A man was arrested for stealing a washing machine and two dryers from the Park Towers Apartments in the 700 block of Hammond Drive in 2012. He was in white pickup with a dealer drive-out tag which a witness recorded. He was arrested approximately two weeks ago and charged with the theft.
Around 9:30 p.m., cops responded to Genki’s Sushi Bar at the Prado on a complaint of a drunken woman who left without paying the bill. The officers were told that she was intoxicated and tried to use several credit cards which were either declined or otherwise not usable. She then ran from the location and unsuccessfully tried to hide at a nearby business. Upon being confronted, she ran again and hid under a trash receptacle, which is where she remained until the officers arrived. The officer saw a woman lying under the trash receptacle in a mix of liquid and solid garbage. She continued to try to be invisible while the officer was talking to her, but eventually she crawled out from under the trash receptical. The officer called several people on her behalf to pay the $35 tab but no luck. She was arrested.
A patrol officer spotted a car with dark, tinted windows. The car was stopped. The officer reported that the man was nervous and the officer smelled marijuana. The man said he didn’t have his driver’s license on him and gave him a name, but the registration information from the tag, including the owner’s photo, didn’t match. The officer asked to look in the car and found a wallet with what appeared to be correct information on that man. The man in the car had a suspension on his license for narcotics violations. He was later arrested for identity fraud, no license, having a suspended license, and the improper use of that license.
6400 block of Peachtree Dunwoody Road 30328 – On May 22, a man was arrested after he was spotted at Home Depot putting items in one of the large, plastic orange buckets and then walking out the garden section without paying. He had taken two Husky impact wrenches ($158) and a couple of other items. He went to jail.
Other Things
A woman on North River Parkway filed a police report stating that on May 22 at about 3:15 p.m., two girls, swimming an apartment complex pool, were acting disorderly. She told them to stop and to behave. They pushed her in the pool. She swam out. The kids fled the scene.
