Atlanta Classical Academy supporters are rejoicing today after the Atlanta Board of Education on Aug. 12 voted to approve the Buckhead Charter School.
“On behalf of the ACA board, a thousands times…thank you,” ACA launch team chairman Matthew Kirby wrote in an email to supporters. “APS Board Members (and the APS switchboard operator) may appreciate a break from the barrage of calls and emails they received from you today. But please note that our board, led primarily by Nancy Meister, voted unanimously in our favor tonight.”
Atlanta Public Schools “Talk Up APS” blog carried the news of the decision. The vote was unanimous, both to deny the superintendent’s recommendation and approve the petition.
District 4 Board of Education member Nancy Meister made the motion recommending approval of the charter school.
If the charter school stays on its current schedule, it could open in 2014 as a K-8 school. The school will use the classical education model, which promotes literacy in western traditions.

So many of you have given so much of your time and energy…so many share in this victory. We are particularly grateful to those who made calls, wrote letters and emails, and attended tonight’s board meeting.
