The Sandy Springs City Council voted on March 18 approve a $298,000 contract for improvements to Mount Paran Road from Roswell Road to Long Island Drive.
Upon approval of the city’s legal and finance departments, the contract will be awarded to Summit Construction & Development, and funds will come from the city’s sidewalk program budget. The project will connect the existing sidewalks on about one-half mile on the south side of the road.
Having inherited few sidewalks when the city was incorporated in 2005, the city last year reported that it had built some 30 miles of sidewalks. In 2013, it budgeted $2.6 million for its sidewalks program and later added $500,000, and for 2014 budgeted $1.6 million.
Sidewalk projects have also included segments of Hammond Drive from Mitchell Road to Lake Forrest Drive, Mount Vernon Highway from Dupree Drive to Northside Drive and Powers Ferry Road from Whitmere Court to Dudley Lane.
The city has recently held open houses to help develop a plan for building new sidewalks, bike paths and trails to improve transportation.
