St. Martin’s Episcopal School’s 5th grade recently conducted its annual Cookie Company project, in which the 5th-graders worked in small teams to form their own cookie companies. Students determine a product to sell, create advertising, plan budgets and then shop for ingredients and bake their own cookies to sell to other students. The project combines language arts, math and their best creative skills in a week-long lesson.

After the cookie company sales, students totaled their revenue and donated all funds to the University of Georgia Marine Extension Service at Skidaway Island on the Georgia coast. Last week, the 5th graders took their annual 3-night trip to Skidaway where they learned about marine life and witnessed scientists in action. They also presented the researchers with a check for $1,000.
