Atlanta Public Schools announced this week that it would pursue a charter system model, according to a report from Decaturish. Under the charter model, APS can waive certain requirements imposed by the state Department of Education. In exchange, APS will face a higher level of accountability for student performance. Other charter systems in the metro area include City Schools of Decatur and Fulton County Schools.

Atlanta’s public radio battle is heating up as WABE 90.1 FM plans to expand its news programming to compete with Georgia Public Broadcasting, which controversially took over the daytime airwaves of WRAS 88.5 FM (Album 88) over the summer. According to Creative Loafing, WABE’s daytime classical music format will be replaced with news, talk and art shows. The programming change is slated to happen later this year or early in 2015. The 9 to 10 a.m. slot will be local news reports and segments from NPR’s Morning Edition. Lois Reitzes, who hosts the classical Second Cup Concert and is the “voice” of the station, will host a a two-hour arts and culture show starting at 10 a.m. Classic music will be available daily on WABE’s live streaming service.

Atlanta City Councilmember Cleta Winslow in conjunction with the Department of Planning and Community Development, the Atlanta Regional Commission, MARTA and the Transportation Oriented Development Collaborative (TOD) invites residents and stakeholders to the second Oakland City MARTA Station Community Meeting on Nov. 17.The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the recreation center of Orange Park, 1305 Oakland Drive. The meeting is an effort to reach out to citizens and stakeholders in Oakland City and the surrounding neighborhoods to gather potential development ideas for the future of the commercial corridor around the Oakland City MARTA Station.
