A man faces charges of intent to distribute cocaine and obstruction following a brief chase Jan. 5, police say.
Nine Dunwoody police officers assisted Ofc. Carmen Gilbert when a passenger ran during a traffic stop, police spokesman Timothy Fecht said.
Danniel Jerome Turner, 37, of Stone Mountain, was seated in the rear of a 1993 Ford Explorer, when Gilbert conducted a traffic stop for a non-working brake light. The driver, Jerry Leon Brooks, 64, of Decatur, pulled over at a gas station on Chamblee-Dunwoody Road at Savoy Drive shortly after noon.
“Nine officers assisted because Mr. Turner fled from officers into the woods, where he was apprehended,” Fecht said.
According to Gilbert’s report, Brooks was released with a verbal warning and the rear seat passenger was taken into custody. A third passenger was also released at the scene.
Gilbert said in his report that he found multiple small jewelry bags, a cocaine and $2,111. The felony violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act with which Turner is charged carries a potential penalty of 18 to 28 months in prison for a first offense and 20 to 32 months in prison for a second offense and up to five years for a third offense.
Turner is currently being held in DeKalb County Jail.
