Ground was expected to broken today to transform the old Excelsior Mill – home to The Masquerade night club and music park for nearly 30 years – into a mixed-use development called North + Line.
According to Atlanta Magazine, the historic mill – located just across North Avenue from Ponce City Market – will remain and be transformed into a chef-drive restaurant and retail shops. Behind the mill, there will be 228 luxury apartments with direct access to the Atlanta BeltLine.
The $60 million project is being led by Southeast Capitol Companies and partners SWH Residential Partners and Coro Realty Advisors.
The Masquerade will have to move out of the mill within two years, but where it will land is still unknown.
By all means–let’s destroy all the great old clubs and theatres (Masquerade, Backstreet, the Garden Hills Cinema, Peachtree Battle Cinema, etc., etc., so that condos and “mixed-use” developments may flourish. Atlanta is famous for that. The Fox would be gone, were it not for the massed outcry of an entire city. As it is, that city is losing its artistic, humane, zestful personality day by day. And nobody says anything anymore.
