A public meeting to discuss the potential transfer of the Bobby Jones Golf Course in Buckhead from the city of Atlanta to the state is set for Friday, June 3, at 3 p.m. The meeting will be held at the course clubhouse, 384 Woodward Way. Mayor Kasim Reed has promised to attend, along with state officials.
The announcement of the public hearing came during a meeting of the city’s finance and executive committee on Wednesday, May 25. The committee voted to send the transfer legislation on to the full Atlanta City Council, but without a recommendation to approve or deny. The city council will take up the legislation at its Monday, June 6, meeting at 1 p.m. in city hall.
The city is considering the transfer legislation of the golf course to the state in return for a large parking deck next to Underground Atlanta – the final piece of property needed for the city to complete the sale of the Downtown site to WRS Inc. The South Carolina-based real estate investment company plans to build apartments, a supermarket, retail and restaurants.
Reed said the state would invest $20 to $50 million in the golf course, build a driving range and create a Bobby Jones museum in honor of the legendary golfer. The plan to reduce the size of the course from 18 holes to nine remains controversial and a point of contention with residents around the course and some golfers.
