
The Atlanta Police Department has confirmed that the off-duty officer involved in an early morning car crash is the son of its assistant police chief, Shawn Jones. Officer Shawn Jones Jr., was injured in the crash, which killed his passenger, Ramish Attai, 20.
According to our broadcast partner CBS46, the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Peachtree and Spring streets in Midtown. According to police, the off-duty officer was the driver of a white Dodge Challenger that crashed into a wall.
Investigators believe speed is a factor in the crash and they are investigating as to whether Jones Jr. was involved in a street race with another car. Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash and charges are pending.
