News Briefs: Bike share sponsor; school property dispute; art sought for Midtown

Georgia’s Own Credit Union has been announced as the first presenting sponsor for Relay, the City of Atlanta’s bike share program. “We are pleased to announce that Georgia’s Own Credit Union is the Atlanta’s bike share program’s presenting sponsor,” said Mayor Kasim Reed. “With this commitment, Georgia’s Own Credit Union becomes a vital partner in our plan to make Atlanta one of the top bicycling cities in the country. We are grateful for this hometown company’s strong support of Atlanta’s growing bicycling culture.” Earlier this month, the City of Atlanta expanded the bike share program with an additional twelve stations in Downtown and Midtown Atlanta. Relay will ultimately include 500 bikes with more than 50 stations citywide.

The City of Atlanta has yet to turn over 10 disputed property deeds to Atlanta Public Schools despite a promise from Mayor Kasim Reed to do so back in February. According to SaportaReport, the school system has indicated it will sell off the properties to developers, but Reed said he has requested APS require a real estate developer to include affordable housing. The school properties include the old George Adair School in Adair Park, Arkwright Elementary in Venetian Hills, Milton Avenue Elementary in Chosewood Park and Rosalie Wright Elementary School in Florida Heights.

The Midtown Alliance is looking for a new art installation to replace the Rockspinner kinetic sculpture at the corner of 10th and Peachtree.  “We have hosted Rockspinner for the past three years at one of the most prominent intersections in Midtown, and the community has truly enjoyed it,” said Midtown Alliance president and CEO Kevin Green. “We are excited to see what’s next as we look for a new piece of art for people to experience.”  To see the request for proposals, visit this link.
