Davonte Childs

A suspect in a 2021 homicide in Sandy Springs was arrested in northern Ohio on Thursday afternoon after a more than two-year search.

Davonte Childs, 27, was arrested in Euclid, Ohio, by members of the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF), the Euclid Police Department, EDGE (Eastside Departments Group Enforcement) SWAT, and Ohio State Highway Patrol’s SRT, according to a press release from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Sandy Springs Police said that a drug transaction led to a double shooting on Aug. 17, 2021, that ended with one man dead and another injured. Police were called to the Orchard Park shopping center on Dunwoody Club Drive and found the two victims. Twenty-two-year-old Yemi Ezekiel Mabiaku died from his injuries.

Warrants were issued for Childs the day after the shooting, according to the release.

In early January information was collected that Childs was hiding in Euclid, Ohio. On Thursday members of the NOVFTF found Childs at a home in Euclid. When they approached the home, he pointed a handgun at the officers. He later surrendered to officers. Two firearms were recovered in the home.

Childs remains in custody in Cleveland until he is extradited to Georgia to face charges in the homicide.

“Law enforcement never gave up on this case and the U.S. Marshals never gives up on finding their fugitives.  Anyone on the run should know you will be found if the U.S. Marshals are looking for you,” U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said.
