In July, we launched coverage of Tucker. With its thriving civic, corporate, and dining community, Tucker was a logical way for us to grow our local footprint through both print (click here to see a PDF replica) and digital products (click here for our Tucker homepage).

Today, we introduced a new, weekly newsletter from Cathy Cobbs called “Cathy Cobbs on Tucker.” It’s a free email that is delivered every Friday at noon. You can read the inaugural issue here (and excerpted below).

Enjoy!

The image shows an advertisement for a new weekly newsletter about Tucker. The background features a road with a pedestrian bridge overhead labeled "TUCKER PATH". There are pedestrians and cyclists on the bridge and path. Large text overlays the image stating "A new, weekly newsletter about Tucker." Below that it says "Subscribe for free." In the bottom right corner is a logo for "RoughDraft" with "Cathy Cobbs on Tucker" written underneath.

It’s time to talk Tucker

Aug. 23 — Happy Friday, Tucker!

Cathy Cobbs here, one of Rough Draft’s staff writers. I cover the city for our latest media foray, the Tucker Reporter. This is the first edition of a weekly newsletter wrap-up of all things Tucker.

After jumping head-first into hyperlocal coverage of the city and surrounding areas, we are still discovering all the elements that make Tucker special.

Is it the long-time residents and businesses who take care of their own? The new-to-town young families eager to engage in the community? Tucker’s city officials launching new programs, building parks and trails?

Are the business owners relocating to Tucker, certain that they will be supported by an energetic community? IMHO, it’s all those elements that make this quirky city a force for now and in the future.

We want to join you on that journey, and we need your help. Send story ideas and feedback to me via email. I hope you enjoy the first of many Friday editions of Cathy Cobbs on Tucker.

HERE’S WHAT’S ON MY RADAR

🚔 Is it time for a Tucker Police Department? A rash of recent business break-ins in downtown and surrounding areas has some people saying, “Yes, please.” Even though the DeKalb County Police Department has a precinct in Tucker, some think a dedicated force would better serve its citizenry. A Facebook group, Tucker Citizens for a Tucker Police Department, was started last week. It’s not a new topic, but in light of recent events, it may trend up into real discussions.

👣 Everyone has a take on Northlake Mall. We received a lot of social media feedback on our story about Tucker’s proposed trail system, especially about a path that would connect downtown to Northlake Mall. While some called it a waste of taxpayers’ money to link to an antiquated, somewhat empty mall, others call it an opportunity to revive the adjacent area.

🔬 Other businesses, like Emory University, think Northlake is a fine place to relocate key departments and offices, including its Science Gallery, which will open its first exhibition entitled “Resilient Earth” on Sept. 14. Read more about it here.

Have a great weekend and please let your friends know about the newsletter. They can sign up for free here.
