Atlanta-based, Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone, 63, was killed Saturday in a car crash.
On March 1, Stone was a passenger in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van that flipped over and was hit by a “big rig,” according to her manager, Walter Millsap III. According to the Associated Press, other passengers in the van survived the accident.
The accident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Interstate 65 near Montgomery, AL. Stone was pronounced dead at the scene, according to AP.
Stone had performed at a Mardi Gras event in Mobile, AL, and was en route to Baltimore, MD to perform at the halftime show for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men’s Championship basketball game on Saturday night. A moment of silence was held at the game to honor Stone.
Stone was a member of the hip-hop trio The Sequence and known for the hit song “Wish I Didn’t Miss You.”
The singer-songwriter wrote hits like “No More Rain (In This Cloud),” the number one hit “Baby” with soul singer Betty Wright, and “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and “Brotha.”
Stone was part of the neo-soul movement in the early 2000s, with her 2001 album “Mahagony Soul” reaching No. 22 on the Billboard 200, while 2007’s “The Art Of Love & War” peaked at No. 11, according to AP.
