This turkey can trot

March 28 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Tucker. Just when you think you’re seeing a figment of your imagination, guess what? You aren’t. There is a turkey wandering around Tucker, and it’s not on the Thomas Family Farm.

🦃This turkey has been spotted on Lawrenceville Highway and Morris Road, strutting through traffic like it owns the town, as we used to say. So far, nobody has come forward with a story that explains the presence of the “eleagris gallopavo.”

But online research reveals that they are friendly, make good pets, and have the ability to recognize faces. They are also delicious with cornbread dressing and cranberry sauce. I hear.

🍗 But we aren’t here to make early Thanksgiving plans. We’re hear to talk about park openings and cleanups and city council meetings, and to remind you for the 800th time that the Tucker Chili Cook-off is tomorrow.

Have a great weekend,
Cathy

Let the games begin

🌷The City of Tucker is celebrating the re-opening of the renovated Fitzgerald Field Sports Complex with a ceremony on Saturday, March 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The City of Tucker acquired Fitzgerald Field in 2019 by agreement with the Tucker Football League, according to information released by the city. Be a good American and clean up

🏞️ While we’re all excited about sprucing up parks, on Satuday, April 5, come to Tucker Nature Preserve, 4408 Lawrenceville Highway for the 14th annual Great American Cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon.

If you need another reason besides wanting to be a good citizen, Tucker’s Chick-fil-A is generously sponsoring the event to provide workers with chicken and breakfast biscuits.

The activities include casting wildflower seed for the honey bee habitat, widening hiking trails, removing invasive vines and fixing a stepping stone pathway. And if you want to go the extra mile, bring books to donate to the park’s Little Library.

‘Hey Satan’ and other future hits

🕺 Longtime Tucker resident James Pinkstone is launching singles from his new album, “Worry Disco” starting April 4, and continuing each Friday until May 2, when the entire album will be available for streaming. The compilation took about 10 years from start to finish, and Pinkstone is playing all the instruments on the tracks, with some help from his friends.

The first single to drop is called “Hey Satan,” and it will be followed by four others with equally interesting titles.

🪩 I am writing a story about his labor of love next week, but in the meantime, here’s a preview

Affordable housing, parks discussion at city council

🧾 The Tucker City Council at its March 24 meeting listened to a presentation about Low Income Housing Tax Credits, the challenges to building affordable housing, and how the city can help facilitate the process.

Jon Toppen of Tapestry Development, who spoke at the March 24 city council meeting, said low-income housing has long had a stigma that is undeserved.

“People think about buildings from the 1970s, and don’t want them in their cities, but we build very high quality housing,” Toppen said. “The average person would drive by our developments and never know that it is affordable housing.”
