Dunwoody Police arrested a 24-year man and charged him with driving under the influence and other charges after he hit a police vehicle as he was traveling down the wrong side of Ashford Dunwoody Road.

Asante Smith, 24, of Atlanta, was booked into the DeKalb County Jail on March 30 and charged with driving under the influence, failure to wear a seat belt, and failure to drive on the correct side of the road, according to DeKalb County Jail records.

Dunwoody Police Sgt. Michael Cheek said the department received a call around 5 a.m. on March 30 about a suspected drunk driver in a Mercedes-Benz sedan at the intersection of Ashford Dunwoody Road and Hammond Drive.

“A witness said the individual appeared to be asleep at the wheel while sitting at that intersection, ” Cheek said. “A short time later, they called back and advised the vehicle started moving again.”

Officers were a short distance from the area when the vehicle was spotted going northbound in the southbound lanes of Ashford Dunwoody Rd at Perimeter Center North, Cheek said.

A responding officer was able to swerve and avoid a crash, but another car driven by Sgt. J. Bradley, a night patrol officer, was not able to avoid the vehicle, which resulted in a head-on crash with the suspected drunk driver, he said.

Georgia State Patrol responded and handled the crash investigation.  The driver also had an active warrant that was confirmed and served.

The suspected drunk driver was taken to the hospital for medical clearance before going to DeKalb jail.
