Local resident Colin Hubbard took inspiration in his participation in an effort to keep Spalding Drive Elementary School open into a bid for election to Sandy Springs City Council’s District 5 seat.

Council member Tibby DeJulio, who has held the District 5 seat since the city’s incorporation in 2005, announced recently he would not run for re-election.

Hubbard, a married father of three children, lives with his family off High Point Road.

In his candidacy announcement, Hubbard said he spoke before the Fulton County Schools Board of Education several months ago in opposition to the closure of Spalding Drive Elementary School. The school board voted to close the neighborhood schools.

“Throughout the entire redistricting process, I was so impressed by the engagement of our entire community, because it was a whole community issue,” Hubbard said in his announcement. “As I stood in line, waiting to address the board, I felt so proud to be a part of this community and of Sandy Springs. At that moment, I confirmed something I had known for a long time – I want to do more.”

Taking that inspiration, Hubbard said he’s motivated to serve as an energized and committed representative ready to prioritize communication with district residents and make sure they are heard.

Hubbard works as vice president of design for a local multi-family real estate developer. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Consumer Economics from the University of Georgia.

According to his announcement, Hubbard is a graduate of Leadership Perimeter (formerly known as Leadership Sandy Springs) Class of 2017 and is a former Leadership Sandy Springs board member. He recently graduated from the Sandy Springs Citizens’ Leadership Academy Class of 2025.

He has served as a Sandy Springs Education Force board member and is a High Point Civic Association board member. He also serves as a school liaison and as a community member of the High Point Elementary School Governance Council.

Qualifying for the 2025 Sandy Springs municipal election begins on Aug. 18 and ends on Aug. 25. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 4, with early voting beginning on Oct. 13.
