Bears in the air
May 7 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. Well, it’s raining, and appears that the weather will remain a little sloppy through the weekend, just like my Uncle Homer.
🕵🏻 This week’s newsletter reminds us again that crime doesn’t pay and includes a story about a delicious treat that, when launched correctly, can put someone in the winner’s circle. It also includes information about this year’s Storefront Art winners, a short report on Food Truck Thursday, and a heads-up about upcoming Dunwoody events of interest.
Thanks as always, for reading. Let’s get to it.

Storefront Art Exhibit celebrates young talent
👨🏼🎨 Create Dunwoody revealed 15 pieces of artwork that will be installed as part of its Annual Storefront Art Exhibit, a walkable gallery celebrating the creativity of Dunwoody High School’s student artists.
The exhibit, which features artwork by 15 Dunwoody High School students, will be displayed in storefronts throughout Dunwoody Village this summer.
“We are grateful that such a talented group of students submitted designs,” said Rosemary Watts, executive director of Create Dunwoody. “The collaboration between our students, teachers, and business community represents the very best of what Create Dunwoody strives for: activating spaces, celebrating creativity, and building connections.”

If you do the crime…..
💸 A Stone Mountain woman wanted for embezzling $500,000 from her Dunwoody employer over the period of two years is now in custody, but her co-conspirator remains at large. Dunwoody police reported on April 29 that Felicia Kelley, 48, has been charged with computer forgery and theft by deception.
In other news, a suspect accused of critically injuring another man after a late-night altercation at a Dunwoody restaurant turned himself into authorities on April 30. People should learn that the 1983 song “Everybody’s Watching Me,” rings true in 2025.

Delicious, but not nutritious
🧸 Full disclosure: In the order of greatness for me when it comes to stories, lost-and found-dogs are number one, followed by rogue goats, helpful llamas, wayward baby bears, then any other animal that’s in the right place and time.
My Instagram feed is filled with stories of donkeys and dogs who are best friends, along with the always-popular story of one animal saving another from drowning. But I’m also down for a good metaphor, which is why the “Gummy Bear Launch” at the Georgia State Science Olympiad fits the criteria of one of my favorite stories.
Two Vanderlyn Elementary School fifth-grade students converted America’s favorite squishy snack into flying projectiles (see their launcher above), which resulted in them taking third place in the state.
Liam Harvey and Alex Henson were one of only two DeKalb County School District teams to ascend the podium. It was a particularly satisfying end for the school’s coach, Sumati Jayaraman, who is retiring from Vanderlyn at the end of the year.

Picture this: Food Truck Thursday
🌯 I dropped by the Dunwoody Homeowners Association’s Food Truck last Thursday and it was jamming, with at least eight food trucks and live entertainment. The aromas emanating from the different trucks were amazing, and everyone seemed happy and excited to be out. Remember, it’s now a monthly event instead of weekly, so the next FTT will be June 19 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Upcoming events: Bike, drink, shop, learn
🚴 Residents are invited to celebrate National Bike Month in May with two group rides. You can bike to lunch at Park Place with the Dunwoody City Council and Dunwoody Police on Friday, May 9 starting at city hall at 11:30 a.m. Use this link to register. My bet is that Mayor Lynn will meet you at lunch after driving there in a bike that looks a lot like a car.
Or, join a family-friendly group bike ride along the Dunwoody Trailway. Meet across from the Brook Run Park playground near the Skate Park for a 9 a.m. meet-up and 9:15 a.m. safety review with Council Member Joe Seconder. At 9:30 a.m., the ride will begin, following a scenic, 3.2-mile roundtrip route through Brook Run Park, Pernoshal Park (who named this park and how is it pronounced?), and Georgetown Park. According to an announcement by the city, all ages and abilities are welcome, and the ride will be paced to accommodate everyone (route pictured above). After the ride ends, there will be a Kids to Parks Day festivities in the front oval of Brook Run Park. Learn more using this link.
☕ Have Coffee with a Cop at Starbucks, 4441 Ashford Dunwoody Rd. on Tuesday, May 13 from 8 to 10 a.m.
👩🏽🍼 This weekend, May 10 and 11 is the Dunwoody Arts Fest on Dunwoody Village Parkway. You could probably find something nice for Mother’s Day, if you are that kind of last-minute shopper – or like me, buy your own gift because you realized long ago that MD is a made-up holiday that invites disappointment year after year. This year, I am going to gift myself with some new Birkenstock sandals. Please don’t ruin the surprise.
👣The city will hold a public information open house on the North Shallowford Path project on Tuesday, May 13, at the North Shallowford Annex located at 4470 North Shallowford Rd. from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. If you are busy that night, you can click here to fill out an online comment card.
