Art in motion

June 11 — This week in Sketchbook, we’re looking at how local creatives are using movement as a way to connect.

First, married artists Whitney and Micah Stansell invite us into “Suspended Spectrum,” their newest large-scale public installation. On view in Midtown, the work uses sunlight and wind to activate hanging panels and transform the concept of space. The piece is the focus of the upcoming free Summer Solstice Soirée happening June 20 at Commercial Row Commons Plaza.

Then, we explore how Atlanta’s creative community is blending art, fashion, and soccer culture ahead of FIFA 2026. From live murals to reimagined jerseys, exhibitions like “Stripes Are Earned,” opening June 16 at Gallery 85, spotlight the city’s unique take on “the beautiful game.”

Keep it moving,
Sherri

Color and Connection: ‘Suspended Spectrum’

🌇 On June 20, “Suspended Spectrum,” created by Whitney and Micah Stansell, becomes the centerpiece of the Summer Solstice Soirée, a free sunset celebration hosted by Midtown Alliance and Dashboard.

For the Stansells – who’ve collaborated for years – the installation made of more than 120 translucent acrylic panels is a reflection of trust and community, ultimately designed to slow people down and reconnect them to the surrounding world.

Both are among the artists contributing to “Stripes Are Earned,” a three-part exhibition opening June 16 at Gallery 85 that celebrates identity, heritage, and community in time for this summer’s FIFA World Club Cup games.
