An overnight mass shooting on Edgewood Avenue has left one person dead and 10 others hospitalized, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Atlanta Police officers responded to the 300 block of Edgewood Avenue in the Sweet Auburn district just before 1:30 a.m. this morning.
Police confirmed that a 27-year-old man was found dead at the scene, while 10 others ranging in age from 18 to 29 were transported to Grady Hospital with gunshot wounds. An 18-year-old male is in critical condition, according to officials.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner identified the deceased victim as Santos J. Wyatt.
Atlanta Police Chief Darien Schierbaum said during a morning press conference that surveillance cameras captured the suspects – three Black males and a Black female – and the footage would be released soon.
Schierbaum said the incident began when the four suspects approached a group waiting at the streetcar stop at 349 Edgewood Ave. He said firearms and 34 shell casings were recovered at the scene.
Schierbaum said there was no motive for the shooting, and it did not appear to be a gang-related incident.
Mayor Andre Dickens encouraged witnesses to come forward and share details or any cell phone images or video they might have taken during the incident. “If you saw something, say something,” Dickens said.
Witnesses can contact (404) 577-8477 to provide anonymous information.
This was the second shooting incident on Edgewood Avenue this weekend. In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 26, three people were found shot at 345 Edgewood Ave. Two males and a female had all sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were transported to the hospital for treatment. That incident remains under investigation.
The Edgewood incident marked the end of a violent weekend in the city. Since Thursday, July 24, 37 people have been shot in 12 separate incidents, with two dead.
Schierbaum said Wyatt’s death was the 57th homicide to occur in the City of Atlanta this year.
“Anger, conflicts, and access to guns is something we still need to address,” Schierbaum said.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
