The Essential Theatre Festival returns to 7Stages this August, and as it enters its second quarter-century, it’s showing no signs of slowing down.
The centerpiece of this year’s Festival will be the World Premiere of the 2025 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award winner, Matt Hoffman’s A Very Special Hospital, a surreal comedy inspired by Hoffman’s experience as a critical care physician. With a deeply emotional family story at its core, this show will surprise and entertain audiences with its absurd humor and poignant human connections.
The show opens Aug. 8 and will run for four weeks on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. From the playwrights whose first full-length script in 2023 was hailed as “powerfully written,” “remarkable,” and “one of the strongest plays of the year,” this latest script promises to deliver similar depth of character and connection but with a lighter, more humorous and surreal tone than his first script.
Readings, showcases, and presentations of Georgia playwrights’ work will round out the Festival on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturday afternoons, showcasing new plays from no less than sixteen different Georgia playwrights during the month-long Festival.
Audiences will have the chance to see everything from first-time playwrights’ first 10 Minute Plays to encore performances of acclaimed shows like Amina McIntyre’s How to Make a Home which toured the metro area this spring with Out of Hand and Kate Crabtree’s Someone Else’s Child, which won both the Atlanta Fringe Audience Choice and Homegrown awards earlier this summer.
Since the Festival began in 1999, Essential has produced more than 40 World Premieres, helping launch the careers of nation-wide successes like Topher Payne and Lauren Gunderson.
The 2025 Essential Theatre Festival continues this tradition with four packed weeks of new work by Georgia playwrights August 8-31 at 7Stages Theatre in Little Five Points. 26 performances, 16 playwrights, 4 weeks. Performance schedule and other details are available at www.EssentialTheatre.com.
