The College Football Hall of Fame in downtown Atlanta is set to host the second annual Georgia Reads Day event on Sept. 22, 2025.
The commemorative day — which was officially proclaimed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp this year — will celebrate all things literature by featuring a “Reading Rally” with over 400 Atlanta Public School students slated to participate.
Led by former University of Georgia football standout and Super Bowl champion Malcolm Mitchell, as part of his “Read with Malcolm” literacy initiative, the rally aims to bring attention to the “importance of improving Georgia’s literacy rates,” according to a release.
The event will also have a meet and greet with several Georgia leaders, with Georgia Literacy Council Chairman Scott Johnson, Dayle Burns (First Lady of the House of Representatives), Sen. Billy Hickman (chair of the Senate Education & Youth Committee) and more expected to be there.
Additionally, the event will highlight the accomplishments of this year’s Georgia Reads Community Award honorees.
The Georgia Reads Community Award program is an initiative that honors several communities throughout the state for their achievements in promoting reading and improving literacy outcomes.
Hosted by the Georgia Council on Literacy, the Georgia Reads Day event will be livestreamed on Georgia Public Broadcasting, giving classrooms across the state the opportunity to watch and participate.
Following the event, the state is encouraging parents, teachers and community leaders to promote literacy in a variety of ways, such as reading daily with children, providing access to books during downtime, monitoring reading progress, attending reading-focused events, engaging in dialogic reading (asking questions, retelling stories) and promoting early literacy through songs, play and storytelling.
