Motorists who use Mt. Vernon Highway over I-285 may get caught up in an overnight detour from Wednesday through Friday as contractors pave the roadway.

The nightly detours on Mt. Vernon Highway will be between Glen Errol Road NW and Hears Ferry Road NW from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Oct. 8 through Oct. 10, according to a news release.

During these overnight detour periods, motorists should use Riverside Drive.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) contractors will implement the detours from Wednesday through Friday. Mt. Vernon will remain open to daytime traffic, according to the news release. Weather conditions may cause detour times to change.

The work is part of the I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane project. It involves extending the auxiliary lane between Roswell Road and Riverside Drive and the reconstruction of the Mt. Vernon Highway bridge over I-285.

This is part of projects across the state to add capacity to improve freight movement, provide operational improvements and efficiencies, enhance safety, and decrease travel times on the transportation network, the release said.

Motorists can get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions by calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or downloading the Georgia 511 app.
