Planta-palooza
Apr. 4 — It’s Cathy and Katie with our weekly newsletter. Lot of things are “growing” in Tucker, pun intended. Let’s get to it.
🌿 When it comes to plants in Tucker, the stars are aligning. First, I already told you about the Tucker First UMC plant sale on April 18 to raise funds for its mission garden, which provides more than 1,000 pounds of fresh produce to the Food Pantry at NETWorks Cooperative Ministries. But wait, there’s more. The Tucker Plant Swap is 8 a.m. to noon on the same day and location as the sale, with the same beneficiary. Win-win.
🍓 Sherry’s Produce, after a kerfuffle about parking, is open for business. Enough said about that.
👑 Tucker showed up and showed out at last week’s “No Kings” rally, a peaceful demonstration that included lots of interesting signs.
😔 Sad news: former Tucker favorite restaurant Blue Ribbon Grill closed last month, citing rising prices and the closure of an anchor tenant that it counted on to draw patrons to the center.
Have a great weekend,
Cathy and Katie

Welcome Co-op shifts focus
🧺 A lot has changed since the Welcome Co-op found its permanent home in Tucker. When the collaborative non-profit opened its warehouse in 2024, its primary focus was housing. The organization partnered with refugee- and immigrant-serving non-profits to set up homes for documented refugees coming to Atlanta, securing 728 apartments in the 2024 fiscal year.
In 2025, the organization was forced to shift its focus after the inauguration of President Donald Trump. On Jan. 20, President Trump signed an executive order suspending the Refugee Admissions Program, indefinitely halting the entry of refugees into the U.S., 45 years after the program was established by President Jimmy Carter.
In the wake of policy changes, the Welcome Co-op shifted to focus less on housing and more on fulfilling refugees’ basic needs like clothing, household items, cleaning supplies, hygiene products, and school supplies.

Time in a bottle
⏰ Tucker staff is collecting feedback about a community-focused time capsule that will honor the city’s history in time for the city’s 10th anniversary later this year.
Tucker’s time capsule will include memorabilia highlighting the businesses, volunteer organizations, government, and resident life of Tucker. The project is part of an effort to lay the groundwork for the city, Tucker Communications Director Sonja Szubski told Rough Draft.
“Since [becoming incorporated], we’ve just really been focusing on laying the foundations for a successful future,” she said. “Now we’re 10 years in, and it feels like we’re getting out of the toddler stage as a city and able to start acknowledging and finding our roots… We’re going deeper now.”

Lerner speaks at Tucker Civic Association
🏙️ The Tucker Civic Association met for its annual meeting at Northlake Church of Christ on March 26. The meeting covered the progress Tucker’s elected leaders have made toward their first-quarter goals, honored the 2026 Citizen of the Year, and took care of administrative business for the nonprofit organization.
Mayor Anne Lerner was the featured speaker for the evening. After only 10 weeks in office, she shared the progress she and members of the city council have made toward the priorities outlined for Rough Draft on Jan. 1.
Lerner emphasized the importance of collaboration between her and members of the city council in the wake of Pine Lake Mayor Brandy Hall’s resignation.
