Where to celebrate the Fourth of July and America 250 in Metro Atlanta

🇺🇸 America’s 250th anniversary, or the semiquincentennial (say that five times fast!) is officially on July 4, but the celebrations are going all summer long. Check out where you can party like it’s 1776 around Atlanta and beyond.

Parties, fireworks, and parades mark part of the commemoration, but the Northside Hospital Peachtree Road Race, a museum scavenger hunt, and author talks are also part of the fun.

Furkids opens new non-traditional dog shelter

🐕 Georgia’s largest no-kill shelter, Furkids, opened its new 15,000-square-foot Sutherlin Dog Shelter, intended to reduce animal stress and create a more humane environment.

Rather than cramped kennels, the Cumming, GA facility features a private room for each dog with a capacity of 135, grooming areas, play suites and yards, training and enrichment spaces, quarantine capabilities, and safer walking access.

“It’s remarkable. It is beyond my wildest hopes and dreams for these dogs and our organization. The outcome was greater than I could have imagined,” said Furkids founder and CEO Samantha Shelton.

Piedmont Park Conservancy announces free summer programming

🛍️ This summer, the Piedmont Park Conservancy is offering a full slate of seasonal programming designed to bring Atlantans together – from outdoor fitness classes and guided walks to craft nights and community markets.

“Piedmont Park has a way of bringing people together,” Doug Widener, President and CEO of Piedmont Park Conservancy, said in a press release. “These events create welcoming spaces for people to connect with one another, explore shared interests and discover the Park in new ways. Whether you’re a longtime Atlanta resident or visiting for the first time, there is something for everyone.”

In addition to fostering connection, the Conservancy’s summer calendar emphasizes accessibility, with a mix of free and low-cost offerings designed to make the Park easy to experience for people of all ages and backgrounds. ‘Before the Storm’: Stories of Atlanta by Lance RussellVIA SAPORTAREPORT

🛤️ By the late 1850s, Atlanta had already transformed from a rough railroad settlement into one of the South’s fastest-growing cities.

In this installment of Iron & Ambition, our ongoing series of the history of Atlanta, we explore the final years before the Civil War as the young city worked to keep pace with its remarkable growth.

Prosperity seemed to be the order of the day. New businesses opened, rail traffic increased, industry expanded, and each passing year brought fresh confidence that Atlanta’s future would continue to shine brightly.

Yet beyond the city limits, tensions were rising across the nation. As debates over slavery deepened and sectional divisions intensified, forces were already gathering that would soon reshape Atlanta’s destiny.

The city was busy planning its future. History, however, had plans of its own.
