School’s in session
Friday, July 31 — Summer passed in the blink of an eye, and it’s already time: school starts on August 3. DeKalb County Schools has created a parent checklist for all things back-to-school. Make sure to review it and ensure everything’s in place for the first day on Monday.
DeKalb County Schools will host “Curriculum Night” at the end of August and beginning of September to introduce families to new district resources, safety procedures, and student initiatives.
🌭 Acceleration Academies is hosting a free block party this Saturday at 10 a.m. There will be free food, music, games, and giveaways, and guests can meet the staff and past graduates and tour the facility.
🦅 Omega Support Center has partnered with Eagle Scout Micah Barnes in building outdoor food pantries across Tucker.
🍸 Tickets are on sale for “Speakeasy Caper: Unscripted!” at Main Street Theatre from August 20 to 30. Secretly hidden inside the beloved restaurant Fresca is a prohibition speakeasy called The Empire (rumored to be mob-owned) where film studio executives, competing railroad tycoons, and film stars meet to discuss the future of their silent films in light of new talkies. Tickets are $65 to $75 and include a three-course dinner, drinks, and the show.

Applications are open for youth council
🏢 Applications are currently open for the City of Tucker’s inaugural Tucker Youth Council. The group of high school students will help the city create projects and community activities and assist in the municipal decision-making process.
The Youth Council, approved by the City Council in May, will include 14 sophomores, juniors, and seniors who will meet monthly from September 2026 to May 2027. Participants must be in their sophomore through senior years of high school and reside within the City of Tucker.

Yemeni-Ethiopian coffee shop to close this year
☕ Five years after opening on Mountain Industrial Boulevard in Tucker, Hesham Abdulla will close his popular Yemeni-Ethiopian coffee shop, Mokhaport, before December.
But rather than shut down the business completely, Abdulla told Rough Draft Atlanta he wants to focus on online sales.
Abdulla said he’s still brainstorming for the future of Mokhaport Coffee & Smoothie, but believes a more scalable model will help him get his organic, health-focused food and drinks to more people.

The Tucker scavenger hunt continues
🔍 Tucker officials are sponsoring a scavenger hunt, encouraging residents to discover and learn about the city’s history in honor of the city’s 10th anniversary.
The hunt brings Tucker residents to 10 locations across the city. If participants take photos at every location and bring them to City Hall, they’ll receive their choice of a pin or coin commemorating Tucker’s 10th anniversary.
While the activity was originally scheduled to last through the month of June, Sonja Szubski, Tucker’s communications director, said that people will still receive the prize for completion as long as supplies last.
