Tucker may expand

Friday, Oct. 23 — Hello Tuckerites! I hope, like me, you’re enjoying the crisp fall air and clear skies with some time outside. While you’re out, make sure you head to the polls before early voting ends on Oct. 30, and certainly by Election Day on Nov. 3 if you haven’t already.

If you live in the Northlake area, you may see a measure on your ballot about annexing certain land into the city’s boundaries. If the vote passes, Tucker will be getting a little bit bigger, with more citizens living the Tucker way.

Read on for more information about the vote, but first:

Annexation is on the ballot

🗳️ Some residents of the Northlake neighborhood in unincorporated DeKalb County will vote on whether to become part of the City of Tucker in the Nov. 3 election.

People living in the proposed annexation area between Northlake Parkway and LaVista Road will vote on Senate Bill 622, which aims to add the area to Tucker’s boundaries and jurisdiction. The bill is sponsored by state Senate Democrats Tonya Anderson, Sally Harrell, Kim Jackson, and Elena Parent, and state Rep. Karla Drenner.

If more than half of voters approve the measure, the area of Northlake that includes Avana City North, Atlas LaVista Hills, and Providence of Northlake will become part of Tucker.

DeKalb amendment seeks to expand LGBTQ+ protections

🏳️‍🌈 Advocacy organizations are calling on DeKalb County residents to advocate for the passage of an amendment to the county’s non-discrimination ordinance (NDO) to further protect LGBTQ+ residents.

DeKalb County passed its first-ever NDO in 2023. While the current ordinance prohibits anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination in public spaces like restaurants and stores as well as county employment, it does not protect the LGBTQ+ community from discrimination in non-county employment and in housing.

The NDO applies to all cities and unincorporated areas in DeKalb County, including Tucker. In June, the Tucker City Council issued a proclamation recognizing Tucker Pride Month and honoring the work of Tucker Pride, the city’s LGBTQ+ organization.
