The State of Georgia has a well-known lottery program, with Scientific Games based in metro Atlanta the company behind many state lottery programs.

A new study from LendingTree looked at how much the United States spends on lottery tickets, from Powerball and Mega Millions to your everyday scratch-offs.

According to the study, while the average American spends about $309 per capita on lottery tickets, Georgians typically spend $500 per capita on tickets.

That puts the state at No. 5 for how much residents spend on taking a chance to win a jackpot.

The study found that Georgians spent $5.65 billion on lottery tickets, with 67.1% going back to players as prizes as of 2024, the most recent year LendingTree studied.

LendingTree said that meant Georgians won back almost $3.8 billion in 2024.

Nationally, U.S. residents spent $110.4 billion on the lottery in 2024, though the LendingTree study said Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah were not included in the study.

Here’s the 10 states spending the most on lottery tickets:

  3. Rhode Island
  4. North Carolina

  6. New York
  7. (tie) Kentucky and Connecticut
