Forbes Magazine ranks Atlanta 4th for jobs in 2008

Forbes Magazine recently ranked Atlanta fourth best city for jobs in 2008.

The top three cities were Salt Lake City, Utah, Wichita, Kan., and Austin ,Texas.

According to the Atlanta Regional Commission, the city of Atlanta is projected to add nearly 140,000 new residents, for a 2030 population of more than 600,000. Metro Atlanta is expected to add nearly two million people and 1.5 million jobs by 2030.

On March 10, Mayor Shirley Franklin spoke with Tory Johnson, founder and CEO of Women For Hire, and the workplace contributor on ABC’s Good Morning America about Atlanta’s success attracting and retaining companies and jobs. Mayor Franklin’s interview can be seen at ABC News online at http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4430744.

To compile the rankings for the Best Cities For Jobs list forecast, Forbes Magazine used five data points, weighted equally: the state’s unemployment rate, job growth, income growth, median household income and the cost of living for full-year 2006 (only partial data is available so far for 2007). They measured the largest 100 metropolitan areas.

Garden party benefits upkeep of Duck Pond

The 2008 Ladies of the Lake Garden Party, an event that raises money for the upkeep of the Duck Pond in Buckhead, will be held Sunday, May 4th from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Duck Pond.

The annual Duck Pond Garden Party is Ladies of the Lake’s biggest event of the year. Local Restaurant Casa Grande, the premier food sponsor for the second year in a row, will cater the party. The event will feature live music by the Big Peach Swing Band for the afternoon and a silent auction in the evening including items such as trips, artwork, photography, wine and donations by local businesses and restaurants.

The Duck Pond is located in the Peachtree Heights East neighborhood, one block east of Peachtree Road between Lakeview Avenue and Peachtree Way.

Although the public regularly enjoys the pond and surrounding parks, Una Rivers, wife of E. Rivers, deeded the area to neighborhood residents in 1933. Therefore, the Peachtree Heights East neighborhood is responsible for all monthly maintenance and upkeep for the pond. All proceeds from the annual garden party assist the neighborhood in maintaining the Duck Pond and its surrounding parks.

Tickets may be purchased by mailing a check made out to Ladies of the Lake to: PHENA/ Garden Party, P.O. Box 550254, Atlanta, GA 30355. The cost is $20 per person for envelopes postmarked before May 1 or tickets may be purchased for $25 at the party. For more information, call 404.869.2308.
